The BHS Scotland safety committee deals with all aspects of horse and rider safety in Scoland. In particular, we aim to reduce the number of road accidents involving horses by educating motorists on how to drive when horses are on the road and teaching riders how to ride safely on the road.

The committee also campaigns nationally for the safety of horses and riders on the road and works closely with police, Department of Transport, Scottish Road Safety campaign and other professional bodies.

NEWS FLASH - new safety links available now under Resources, under the Info tab at the top right of this page.

Here is a selection of ongoing safety matters and resources:

                                                                Riding and Road Safety Test
The BHS Riding and Road Safety test is taken by more than 4,000 riders a year from 12yo up to help minimise the risks involved when riding on the road.  Many riding schools and test centres organise training and tests for their clients so it is not essential to own your own horse to take part. Equally, you do not need to attend a centre in order to take the test. For more information about the Riding and Road Safety Test, including test dates: download

Record any equestrian accidents or incidents here
www.horseaccidents.org.uk: you can record incidents on the road, with low flying aircraft, road surface dressings, dangerous dogs, fireworks, wind turbines, and issues with gates. Sharing your experiences could make a huge difference to all riders. Accurate statistics are essential in order to enable the BHS to lobby government for better conditions for equestrians and we can only campaign when we have sufficient information to carry forward concerns.  Thankyou.
